11 Best Cult Movies to Watch Right Now If You Wanna Understand the Hype

Published

on

While we’re all trying our best to spend the rest of 2020 hunkered down at home counting down the days until this cursed year ends, we might as well cross some must-watch movies off our lists—starting with the cult classics your “cool film friends” won’t stop talking about.

Just so we’re all on the same page here, cult classics often don’t do amazing when they hit theaters (some of these movies straight-up bombed, to be honest), but eventually they garner a dedicated, passionate, and—in the case of my love for Hocus Pocus—deranged fandom. A ~cult~ following, in other words. (BTW, if you stumbled across this story because you’re in the mood to watch something about actual cults, check out this list of the best true-crime movies.)

In the event that you’re looking for something new to stan in your never-ending free time, here are 11 cult movies to get you started, friend.

‘The View’s Sunny Hostin Details the “Race Based Discrimination” She Experienced at ABC

The View‘s Sunny Hostin is opening up about the “race based discrimination” she has experienced while working at ABC. In a virtual event hosted by 92Y to promote her new book, I Am These Truths: A Memoir of Identity, Justice, and Living Between Worlds, Hostin, who is Afro-Latina, revealed that when she was first hired on the ABC talk show, she wasn’t formally announced or even given a dressing room near her View co-hosts. “When I was experiencing it, I was thinking, ‘I hope it’s not because I’m a woman of color,’” she told Meghan McCain, the event’s moderator. “You don’t want to be accused of using the race card when it’s not there.”

In her new memoir, Hostin details her “cattle call” audition process for The View, which involved intense focus group testing with other prominent television personalities, including S.E. Cupp. “I think it’s dehumanizing the way they made these poor women audition,” said McCain during Wednesday night’s virtual event.

“It was awful,” replied Hostin. “All these women were in this room, it was hot, there was no food.” She explained that two of the co-hosts at the time, Whoopi Goldberg and Rosie O’Donnell, were there to test candidates’ chemistry, but they looked equally miserable. “It was one of the worst experiences of my life,” recalled Hostin.

Despite rumors that Hostin was ABC’s frontrunner for The View seat, the job went to Rosie Perez, who Hostin says “wasn’t at” the grueling audition. “I was told later that they gave it to Rosie because they were looking for a Latina,” she said.

“But you’re a Latina,” replied McCain. “Yes,” said Hostin, explaining that she was made to feel that she was “not Latina enough” for the job. “I was devastated about it. I called The View people all kinds of names.”

Just over a year later, in 2016, Hostin was once again approached about joining the show. “You were hired, not hired, but then they came back around within a year,” recapped McCain, adding that The View  “dicked around with [her] for a long time,” as well. “They ultimately picked you five years ago, but you didn’t get an announcement. When I was hired it was, ‘Welcome!’ You didn’t get a dressing room. You were kind of slipped in casually.”

McCain then brought up “the awkward elephant in the room,” as in ABC News’ Barbara Fedida scandal. In June, HuffPost’s Yashar Ali reported that Fedida, a network veteran, allegedly made racist comments about various Black employees, including Hostin and Robin Roberts. The following month, Fedida was fired following an investigation into the allegations.

“Why do you think that this still happens in 2020?” asked McCain. “Why do you think there’s not an understanding that all women coming onto an equal show are equal? Why do you think your experience was so different than mine?”

“I don’t understand why this is happening still,” said Hostin. “There is systemic racism in our country and in our corporations.” The co-host and ABC legal analyst added that “for some reason there is this mindset that [she] will accept less” than her white counterparts. “Because the process is so opaque, I don’t know what the norm is, or what I should be receiving,” she said of her feelings at the time. “I this case, I thought, ‘Well, I should get a dressing room on the second floor where everyone else is’ because I could see that was happening. ‘I should get the announcement’ because I could see that was happening. Why wasn’t I getting that?”

Now, a few months removed from the scandal, Hostin believes that ABC and parent company Disney are slowly making progress. “What keeps me going is I receive calls of support from you, from my co-hosts, from the head of Disney who said, ‘We’re going to recalibrate and we’re going to fix this.’ I’ve seen positive steps,” she said. “If my humiliation and pain moves this in the right direction, that’s significant … We’re moving in the right direction. If that continues, it’s all worth it.”

Sunny Hostin’s new memoir, I Am These Truths: A Memoir of Identity, Justice, and Living Between Worlds, is now available wherever books are sold. The View airs every weekday at 11 a.m. ET on ABC.

Of course, Tom Holkenborg is no stranger to scoring major motion pictures. In the last half decade alone, his music credits have included Mad Max: Fury Road, Deadpool, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Tomb Raider, Terminator: Dark Fate, Alita: Battle Angel and Sonic the Hedgehog. Still, the fact that he now gets to leave his stamp on a franchise he’s been passionate about for a long time surely makes Godzilla vs. Kong a standout entry on his resume.
