3-Min Explainer: The Government’s Plan To Rescue Our Economy Froths Yet Another Fossil Fuel

Published

on

The good news is the government wants to spend a fucktonne of cash to help the economy recover from the pandemic. The bad news is that the cash is going to go towards a slew of new natual gas projects which will do nothing but double down Australia’s love affair with fossil fuels.

Obviously, at a time when the effects of climate change are becoming more and more noticeable, the last thing we should be doing is setting ourselves up for another few decades of runaway greenhouse gas emissions.

And yet that’s exactly what the government thinks is the best solution to the current economic situation.

“To help fire our economic recovery, the next plank in our JobMaker plan is to deliver more Australian gas where it is needed at an internationally competitive price,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced.

“We’ll work with industry to deliver a gas hub for Australia that will ensure households and businesses enjoy the benefits of our abundant local gas while we hold our position as one of the top global liquefied natural gas exporters.”

If you think it sounds bad, you’re right. Here’s why.

How much more gas does the government want to extract?

Heaps.

As part of the plan, $28.3 million will go towards “unlocking” five major gas basins. They include the Beetaloo Basin in the Northern Territory, and Queensland’s North Bowen and Galilee basins.

The Galilee Basin might sound familiar. That’s because it’s already the site of 10 major fossil fuel projects or proposals, including the infamous Adani coal mine.

Among a frankly huge laundry list of reasons why these existing coal projects shouldn’t go ahead, one is that exporting them via sea will completely wreck the Great Barrier Reef.

Liquefied natural gas is often transported by – you guessed it – ships, and they may well contribute to ruining the world’s largest natural reef.

On top of that, the government also wants to set supply targets for the states, pushing them to produce more gas. And for licence holders, a “use-it or lose it” requirement may come into play meaning a bunch of potential projects would suddenly become very real.

What will this do for us?

Supporters of the government’s plan will say more gas means cheaper energy prices, and that includes electricity, as well as cooking and heating if you have gas at home.

“We are building a robust and competitive gas industry that will allow both gas producers and users to thrive, with lower prices and lower emissions benefiting all Australians,” Energy Minister Angus Taylor said.

The thing is, these new infrastructure projects will take years to get up and running, so there’ll be absolutely no positive impacts to the cost of electricity in the short term.

Also, the government wants a to supposedly “level the negotiating playing field for gas producers and consumers through a voluntary industry-led code of conduct,” which, if gas producers’ previous conduct is anything to go by, will be weak as shit.

The one thing that’s not debatable is that these projects will create jobs, but many of those jobs could’ve been created by investing in renewable energy instead.

Isn’t natural gas supposed to be better for the environment?

Yeah, nah.

Firstly, there’s nothing more “natural” about natural gas than there is about coal, coffee or the coronavirus. So don’t be fooled by the name – it’s still a dirty, environmentally-unfriendly fossil fuel.

Gas is bad for the environment the from the moment it’s extracted. Many of the projects the government wants to carry out, for example, will depend on fracking, which is already polluting the ground, crops and water in Australia and around the world.

Then there’s the gas which leaks from the wells when it’s being extracted. This goes straight into the atmosphere, and for some gasses like methane, they’re literally among the worst greenhouse gasses out there.

Finally, all this gas is supposed to be burned one way or another. Sure, burning gas is usually cleaner than burning coal, but it’s still shit for the environment, especially when zero-emission alternatives like solar and wind are *waves hands at the entire continent* right there.

Is the government only focusing on fossil fuels and ignoring renewables?

Not entirely, but they’re really not in the spotlight compared to all the aforementioned shit.

The government’s pledging $95.4 million to help the agricultural, manufacturing, industrial and transport sectors become more energy-efficient. That’s a small step in the right direction.

However, it’s also pledging $50 million to support carbon-capture projects, which is a relatively unproven way to keep fossil fuel plants running on their last legs.

For transport, the government wants to invest in hydrogen and biofuels, two solutions which sound decent in theory but are far more inefficient than existing battery technology.

Thankfully, there is an alternative. The Million Jobs Plan, backed by tech billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes, aims to create 125,000 jobs by next year through $25 billion in renewable energy investment. Beyond that, hundreds of thousands more jobs could be created by the plan.

But for the time being, as far as the government’s concerned, renewables have clearly taken a back seat to yet another goddamn fossil fuel.

2020 Billboard Music Awards nominations list: Post Malone leads with 16, followed by Lil Nas X, Billie Eilish and Khalid

Published

The 2020 Billboard Music Awards were originally supposed to be presented in April, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced them to delay. However, after other awards groups like the Emmys, ACM Awards and MTV Video Music Awards found ways to go forward virtually, the BBMAs are set to air on Wednesday, October 14, with returning host Kelly Clarkson. The nominees were announced on September 22, and the winners will be determined by chart metrics like album sales, track sales, streaming performance, touring performance and social engagement. Scroll down to see the complete list of contenders.

Post Malone dominates the list with 16 bids across 15 categories, including Top Artist. During the eligibility period (March 23, 2019 to March 14, 2020), he topped the Billboard 200 albums chart with “Hollywood’s Bleeding” and hit number-one on the Hot 100 singles chart with “Circles,” which eventually broke the record for the most weeks in the top 10 for any single in history.

Lil Nas X is next with 13 nominations thanks in no small part to the unprecedented success of “Old Town Road,” his collaboration with Billy Ray Cyrus that spent a record-breaking 19 weeks at number-one on the Hot 100. However, Lil Nas X isn’t nominated for Top Artist, which makes him the most nominated artist who’s absent in that category.

Billie Eilish and Khalid are tied with 12 nominations apiece, including Top Artist for both. Eilish had a stellar run during the eligibility period, topping the Billboard 200 with “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” and the Hot 100 with “Bad Guy.” She also won three MTV Video Music Awards and swept the Grammys. And Khalid enjoyed commercial success with his album “Free Spirit” and single “Talk.”

Joining Post Malone, Eilish and Khalid in the Top Artist race are the Jonas Brothers and Taylor Swift, though keep in mind that this eligibility period ended well before Swift dropped her surprise album “Folklore,” so her nominated chart achievements revolve around the album she released last summer, “Lover.” So who do you think will win? See the complete list of contenders below.

10-Minute Ab Workouts on YouTube

Published

on

By

To each their own, but I really don’t need more than 10 minutes tops to feel my abs beg (no, demand) for a stoppage to the core workout I’m doing. More important than timing is exercise variety, meaning that you’re diversifying the types of moves you’re doing. Try some dynamic moves, ones on your feet or lying down, and others that bring a real challenge such as a reverse plank with a leg lift. It’s also important that you hit different parts of your core — you should definitely think outside of the box, because there’s a world far beyond crunches waiting for you.

Keep reading for trainer-led ab workout videos that will take you 10 minutes (or less!) to complete right at home. Some require dumbbells; but, of course, you can modify the workouts as needed for your fitness level. Quick and effective workouts always make us feel like we’ve unlocked a secret to making the most out of our day!

If you’re looking for more videos aside from the ones ahead, you can try these these dumbbell-only ab workouts, these sessions that are entirely about planks, or this equipment-free routine from a trainer.

Two months on from her breakup, 2018 The Bachelorette Ali Oetjen star has posted a video of herself sobbing on Insta to talk about how she feels about splitting with Taite Radley.

In the video, she doesn’t say a word – she just cries. Her caption, however, says it all.

“You always see happy me, this is me today and has been my daily occurrence since my breakup, it’s bloody slow healing, sadness and hurt fill my whole body,” Oetjen wrote.

“Meditation, yoga, exercise, nature, cooking, family, friends and focusing on my goals allows for my peaceful spirit to just be.

“I’ve never experienced anything like this where my soul still feels connected, I still love but know we don’t align.”

You always see happy me, this is me today & has been my daily occurrence since my breakup, it’s bloody slow healing, sadness & hurt fill my whole body. Meditation, Yoga, exercise, nature, cooking, family, friends and focusing on my goals allows for my peaceful spirit to just be. I’ve never experienced anything like this where my soul still feels connected, I still love but know we don’t align. I want to share this to inspire strength in you, as you do me, because I know you’re also going through a break up or you’re finding it extremely tough atm in these huge world changes & darkness we’re being exposed too. KNOW YOU ARE NOT ALONE, THAT WE ARE THE LIGHT, YOU ARE LOVED & EVERYTHING IS HAPPENING DIVINELY & AS HARD AS IT MAYBE TO COMPREHEND THAT THIS IS MEANT FOR US. WE ARE GROWING STRONGER, AWAKENING to PURGE THE HATRED & are ASCENDING to be FREED FROM CONDITIONAL PATTERNS & CAN THEN BE DIRECTED BY OUR SOULS. We’re all equal beings & hopefully by now waking up to our true essence, our true nature which is only LOVE. When you follow me, view my pics/vids/see me on the street, look into my soul as I do yours & know we’re the same. #love #castlight #spreadlove #nonduality #vulnerability #oneworld #letgo #walkyourpath #soulmates

A post shared by ALI WELLNESS ???????? (@alioetjen) on

Back in July, Oetjen announced the two were separating to “focus on our own paths,” but in her announcement, she maintained that there was still some kind of love between the two.

Since then, most of her posts have been the cheerful, influencer-type stuff we’ve come to expect.

Judging by her caption on, that love’s still there, which doesn’t make things easier.

“I want to share this to inspire strength in you, as you do me, because I know you’re also going through a break up or you’re finding it extremely tough atm in these huge world changes and darkness we’re being exposed to,” she added.

For the next part, Oetjen went all-caps:

“KNOW YOU ARE NOT ALONE, THAT WE ARE THE LIGHT, YOU ARE LOVED & EVERYTHING IS HAPPENING DIVINELY & AS HARD AS IT MAYBE TO COMPREHEND THAT THIS IS MEANT FOR US. WE ARE GROWING STRONGER, AWAKENING to PURGE THE HATRED & are ASCENDING to be FREED FROM CONDITIONAL PATTERNS & CAN THEN BE DIRECTED BY OUR SOULS.”

Finally – and this is perhaps the takeaway for her future posts – Oetjen said she wasn’t alone in how she felt. In the comments, people let her know she was spot on.

“We’re all equal beings and hopefully by now waking up to our true essence, our true nature which is only LOVE,” she said.

“When you follow me, view my pics/vids/see me on the street, look into my soul as I do yours and know we’re the same.”
