Drake’s “Toosie Slide” Video and the Emerging Rules of Quarantine-Core

mm

Since the Brooklyn Nets’ Kevin Durant announced that he tested positive for coronavirus a few weeks ago, Drake, who’d been with him a few days prior to the diagnosis, has been self-isolating at his home in Toronto. It’s sleek and chilly, full of gleaming marble surfaces, some art by KAWS, and an indoor pool, all of which are on display, MTV Cribs–style, in the music video for the new song “Toosie Slide” that he released on Friday.

The song is made for TikTok—not in the offhand sense that the dance Drake describes in its chorus lends itself to imitation, but that he worked on it with popular users of the platform. The dancers and musicians Toosie, Hiii Key, and Ayo & Teo are the source of the Toosie Slide: “Drake hit me up and was like, ‘Yo, I need your help,’” Toosie told Rolling Stone on Thursday. “So he sends the record. It was just an idea at the time. It was just the hook and a verse. I came up with this dance. [Drake said,] ‘What you think? You think you can come up with a dance for this song that I made?’” The four of them were together and “came up with it pretty fast.”

And if Drake engineered the song for a platform, he and director Theo Skudra built the video for the pandemic. As self-isolation and social distancing become increasingly broad and familiar mandates, he wears a face mask and gloves in the video and showcases the palatial emptiness of his current situation. The video opens by scanning a vacant Toronto; at the end, fireworks go off, with no one else in sight to see them. Over this period there have been coronavirus raps, scores of delayed albums, concerts, and festivals, Instagram Live producer battles and DJ sets, an uptick in rappers recording feature verses, and now, maybe, a kind of quarantine-core aesthetic.

The state of celebrity affairs and social media use amid the coronavirus pandemic has meant that we’ve likely never seen more of their dwellings than in recent weeks, and that more home inventory is on the way. “Toosie Slide” and the Toosie Slide should take off, to the extent that they haven’t already—the choreographers were demoing the dance earlier this week and the music video is currently the number one trending video on YouTube.

Cardi B is firing back.

The “Bodak Yellow” rapper took to social media to clap back at an Internet troll that threw shade at her and Offset‘s daughter Kulture

Insulting the mom of one, the Twitter user wrote, “Kulture don’t like her momma and that’s the funniest part…every video she be ignoring tf outta all that screaming.”

Shutting down the hater, Cardi responded with a sweet video featuring the 22-month-old, where the duo can be seen having an adorable mother-daughter moment. “Give mommy kiss, give mommy kiss,” she tells Kulture, who happily obliges after flashing the camera a precious smile. Cardi captioned the video, “Loud and wrong.”

This isn’t the first time that the “No Limit” rapper has come to her baby girl’s defense against trolls. Back in February, she had a fiery exchange with a fan that said Kulture was “not the cutest.”

Henry Cavill In Talks to Return as Superman in Upcoming DC Movie

Henry Cavill isn’t hanging up his Superman cape just yet. Sources confirm to Variety the “Man of Steel” actor is in talks to return as Clark Kent in an upcoming DC Comics movie.

Warner Bros. and Cavill’s reps couldn’t be reached for comment Wednesday.

In addition to Zack Snyder’s Superman origin story “Man of Steel” in 2013, Cavill played the iconic hero in 2016’s “Batman v Superman” and 2017’s “Justice League.”

Snyder recently announced the long-rumored “Snyder Cut” of “Justice League” for HBO Max, though insiders tell Variety Cavill wouldn’t be suiting up for the director’s cut, but rather a cameo in one of DC’s upcoming films, which include “Aquaman 2,” “The Suicide Squad” and “The Batman.”

In a Mens’ Health’s December cover story, Cavill revealed he had not given up the role.

“The cape is still in the closet,” he said. “It’s still mine. I’m not going to sit quietly in the dark as all the stuff is going on. I’ve not given up the role. There’s a lot I have to give for Superman yet. A lot of storytelling to do. A lot of real, true depths to the honesty of the character I want to get into. I want to reflect the comic books. That’s important to me. There’s a lot of justice to be done for Superman. The status is: You’ll see.”

The British actor’s most recent big-screen appearance came in 2018’s “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” alongside Tom Cruise. Cavill currently stars in Netflix’s “The Witcher” and plays the role of Geralt of Rivia. He’s repped by WME, manager Dany Garcia of the Garcia Companies and Gang, Tyre, Ramer and Brown. The news of Cavill coming on to a DC Comics movie was first reported by Deadline.
