Jenna Bush Hager remembers White House butler who is dead at 91 from coronavirus

TODAY show co-host and former first daughter, Jenna Bush Hager became emotional Friday as she told viewers about a former butler who’d helped make the White House feel like home — and who died Thursday due to the coronavirus.

Wilson Jerman, 91, started working in White House in 1957 and served 11 different presidents, starting as a cleaner. He was promoted to butler by Jacqueline Kennedy, and is the longest-serving employee of the White House.

“He was the loveliest. I think ‘lovely’ is a word that can kind of be overused, but … he was always smiling,” Hager recalled, choking back tears at the memory.

Jerman made the White House feel like home, she said. “We knew him when my grandpa (George H.W. Bush) was president … I mean, I don’t think his real name was Smiley, but everybody called him Smiley, because he was always smiling.”

In a joint statement, Former President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush said of Jerman that, “He was the first person we saw in the morning when we left the residence and the last person we saw each night when we returned.”

Former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton also issued a statement saying that were deeply saddened by his passing.

Finishing her tribute, Hager said, “We loved him. He was beloved by my family, and he will be so missed.”

Lovecraft Country Trailer: A Black Man Faces Racist Cops and Supernatural Monsters in Jordan Peele’s HBO Drama

Jordan Peele’s new HBO drama Lovecraft Country features burning crosses and racist cops… and those are just the human monsters.

HBO has released a new trailer for the series — set to debut in August — with Jonathan Majors (The Last Black Man in San Francisco) starring as Atticus, a Black man in 1950s America who’s searching for his missing father, played by The Wire‘s Michael Kenneth Williams. He’s joined by his uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) and his friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett), hoping to reclaim what his dad called his “birthright”: Lovecraft Country.

As he travels the country, Atticus runs into a blockade of unfriendly cops — “they don’t like outsiders at all,” he’s warned — and we see shots of burning crosses as George says he’s heard about “travelers being attacked in the surrounding woods.” But maybe the attackers weren’t human: We see the trio in the woods as some sort of subterranean beast burrows towards them at a furious pace. This is Jordan Peele, after all. (Peele serves as an executive producer, along with J.J. Abrams and Underground‘s Misha Green, who’s also the showrunner.)

Before we know it, Atticus, George and Letitia are fighting for their lives, both against hostile humans and unseen spooky forces. It all culminates with a huge, Gothic-style house collapsing to the ground as Atticus sprints away in terror. His search for his father “begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback,” per the official description.

The “Boss Bitch Fight Challenge” Lets Scarlett Johansson, Drew Barrymore, Margot Robbie, and More Kick Virtual Butt

mm

Stuck inside with hours to spare, ordinary people resort to baking bread or taking up embroidery. But celebrities and stunt people are getting a little more creative with their extra time and isolation.

A slew of female celebrities and stuntwomen have banded together for the “Boss Bitch Fight Challenge,” a video of virtual ass-kicking telephone which has gone viral for the amount of famous faces — including Scarlett Johansson, Margot Robbie, Drew Barrymore, Halle Berry, and more — willing to take fake beatings from professional stuntwomen. The whole challenge was started by Quentin Tarantino-verse actor and stuntwoman Zoe Bell, who gathered other Tarantino alums and other female celebrity friends to beat each other up virtually.

Bell, a stunt performer and actor who starred in Tarantino’s Death Proof, had a very cool solution for quarantine boredom that resulted in the best crossover event since Avengers: Infinity War. In fact, it may be an even better crossover event, because when else will you get the baddest girls of the Tarantino verse crossing fists with Charlie’s Angels and Marvel and DC’s toughest superheroes and villains? Only in the viral “Boss Bitch Fight Challenge,” which Bell shared earlier this weekend on Instagram.

The video starts with Bell at home, exclaiming, “I’m so bored! I just want to play with my friends,” before realizing that she can — by kicking the screen and starting off a game of ass-kicking telephone. Everyone from fellow Tarantino-verse alums Zoe BellTracie ThomsRosario DawsonDaryl Hannah, and Julia Butters, to Black Widow co-stars Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh, to Birds of Prey co-stars Margot Robbie and Rosie Perez, former Charlie’s Angels Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz, and Xena herself, Lucy Lawless, picked up the challenge to alternately punch, hit, or kick the next person to increasing degrees of creativity and violence.

Johansson used a medicine ball, Pugh thought twice about breaking a wine bottle, and Lawless even brought out her old Xena chakram. Other highlights include Hannah channeling her Kill Bill character by wielding a needle, Cameron Diaz throwing a bag of groceries, Halle Berry throwing herself into the pool for the Gram, and of course, Robbie coming out swinging with her Harley Quinn bat.

It’s a pretty awesome video that was likely inspired by the viral video of the quarantined stuntmen showing off their acrobatics and stunt skills in an original game of virtual butt-kicking (with at least three times more tables destroyed). But that one didn’t have Xena bringing out her old chakram.

9-1-1 season 3 episode 18 (finale) spoilers: Train crash chaos

mm

Published

on

Next week on Fox, 9-1-1 season 3 episode 18 is going to air and the stakes are going to be massive. Could they not be? This is the season finale, and you should know how big these can be from the past two episodes we’ve seen of this variety. Also, know that this was the planned finale — we know that there are some other shows out there that didn’t get a chance to air their proper endings due to what is going on in the real world. Luckily, the Angela Bassett drama is not one of them.

We don’t think there’s all that much in the finale synopsis that is going to surprise you, given that much of it has been amplified already in various promos:

The 118 rush to save lives in the aftermath of a massive train derailment in the all-new “What’s Next?” season finale episode of 9-1-1 airing Monday, May 11 (8:00-9:01 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (NIN-318) (TV-14 D, L, V)

If there is a larger question we’re left to wonder right now, it’s simply this: What is going to happen when it comes to the future of these characters? Could anyone die? There’s legitimate reason to be terrified about that, just as there is also legitimate reason to think that there are some emotional stakes in here, as well. We’re also looking forward to potentially getting a little bit more of Connie Britton as Abby — we know that her return is not one that is probably going to last, but we’re planning to have some fun with how long the show does have her. The world of 9-1-1 is just a little more nostalgic with her around.

Remember that there is a 9-1-1 season 4 renewal already official at Fox — with that in mind, you have at least one less thing to worry about until the finale airs.
