Quibi, Coolfire Studios prep true crime series “Murder Unboxed”

mm

Published

on

Mobile-first streamer Quibi has ordered the true crime series Murder Unboxed from St. Louis-based Coolfire Studios.

The series mimicks the style of popular online “unboxing” videos by dusting off boxes of evidence from “outlandish” real life murder cases.

Each episode takes a new case and introduces seemingly unrelated evidence, one item at a time.

Through interviews with investigators, prosecutors and witnesses of each case, along with stylized recreations, the story of how the items — from a bottle of brandy to a toaster, a pile of cash and a Bourne Supremacy DVD — came together to solve the previously unsolved crime.

Jeff Keane, David Johnson and Steve Luebbert serve as executive producers for Coolfire Studios. Jeremy Corray is co-executive producer.

Quibi, which has been recently ramping up its unscripted lineup with series such as Punk’d and Bad Ideas with Adam Devine (w/t), launches April 6.

The 13 Best Classic Movies on Netflix, and Yes, the ’90s Count Now

mm

Published

on

When the spirit moves you to finally watch those older films you’ve never seen, look no further than these classic films streaming on Netflix. You know the quotes, but have you really seen them all? Do you really know exactly where that reference comes from? Now’s the time to find out, people. Let me do that annoying scroll work for you with these recommendations.

I would like to issue a warning to all the Gen X-ers and millennials out there. A lot of these “classics” are from the ’80s and one or two are from the ’90s. Sorry, they’re considered old now! We all have to accept the passage of time. So without further ado, here are the classics.

Back to the Future (1985)

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

You know how I know this movie is dated? No teenager would be so unsupervised that they would be able to befriend a middle-aged mad scientist without anyone batting an eye.

STREAM NOW

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Talk about unsupervised teenagers! Actually, I don’t want to, because it makes me sound deeply uncool. John Hughes’ quotable comedy totally holds up and is a hundred percent a classic.

STREAM NOW

Groundhog Day (1993)

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Reliving the same day over and over again is such a common trope that dozens of television shows, action films, horror films, and even Broadway musicals have used it. Groundhog Day is the O.G. though, and it doesn’t get better than that.

STREAM NOW

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

A classic comedy that has a very dedicated fan base. It’s so silly you won’t be able to help but gut-laugh.

STREAM NOW

Tootsie (1982)

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Dustin Hoffman did a rare “self-burn” with Tootsie, playing a difficult actor who finally gets work when he disguises himself as a woman and gets cast on a soap opera.

STREAM NOW

Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Classic Indiana Jones Harrison Ford is the hottest Harrison Ford. I will not be taking questions. Class dismissed.

STREAM NOW

Taxi Driver (1976)

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Not to be reductive, but every boy you know does an impression of this scene.

STREAM NOW

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968)

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Sure, Mary Poppins is Dick Van Dyke’s most popular children’s musical, but Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is an eccentric classic as well.

STREAM NOW

The Wicker Man (1973)

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Not the remake with Nicholas Cage, the original ’70s horror film that made Pagan rituals cool way before Midsommar came around.

STREAM NOW

The Natural (1984)

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Miss baseball season? Maybe Robert Redford can cheer you up.

STREAM NOW

Jerry Maguire (1996)

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

I mean, it doesn’t get more classic than “you had me at hello”—don’t you think?

STREAM NOW

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

The fact that there’s a remake that everybody hates proves this is a beloved classic.

STREAM NOW

First Wives Club (1996)

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

There’s way too much male energy on this list, no? That’s why we save Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn, and Bette Midler’s classic revenge comedy for last.

DJ Caruso Adapts Romance Novel ‘Redeeming Love’ Co-Produced By Pure Flix Entertainment

mm

Published

on

Photo credit: Redeeming Love Holding LLC

D.J. Caruso is in post-production on an adaptation of the classic Francine Rivers romance novel “Redeeming Love”  that is a co-production from Pure Flix Entertainment, the faith-based distributor announced Wednesday.

“Redeeming Love” stars Abigail Cowen, Tom Lewis, Logan Marshall-Green, Famke Janssen, Nina Dobrev and Eric Dane and completed its principal photography in March in Cape Town just before much of the world started seeing shutdowns due the coronavirus.

Pure Flix produced the film with Nthibah Pictures and Mission Pictures International with “I Can Only Imagine” producers Cindy Bond and Simon Swart re-teaming on the project. The producers are in conversations with distribution partners and are eyeing a Spring 2021 theatrical release.

“Redeeming Love” is set in California and Boston during the Gold Rush Era of the 1850s. Though the film itself is described as not a faith-based adaptation, the book is a more contemporary retelling of the biblical book of Hosea. The story centers on Angel (Cowen), who was sold into prostitution as a child. She has survived through hatred and self-loathing, until she meets Michael Hosea (Lewis) and discovers there is no brokenness that love can’t heal.

Rivers’ book is a long-time best-seller dating back to its publication in 1991, having sold over three million copies and been published in more than 30 languages.

The project is an unusual one for Caruso, who is known for films such as “xXx: Return of Xander Cage,” “Eagle Eye,” I Am Number Four” and “Disturbia,” but he said he fell in love with the characters and the story when his wife introduced him to the novel.

“While many are victims of horrible circumstances that will haunt them forever, some characters are able to overcome the pain, the sorrow and the brutality to discover how remarkable they truly are,” Caruso said in a statement. “Angel’s journey reminds us that healing happens through love and acceptance, never through judgment or force.”

“Redeeming Love” is produced by Cindy Bond through her Mission Pictures International label, Simon Swart and Wayne Fitzjohn through their Nthibah Pictures production banner and Michael Scott, David A.R. White and Brittany Yost for Pure Flix Entertainment. The executive producers are Francine Rivers and Roma Downey through LightWorkers.

Caruso is also attached to direct “xXx 4,” first announced back in 2018.

Francine Rivers is represented by Browne & Miller Literary Associates and IPG. Caruso, Marshall-Green, Dobrev and Dane are represented by CAA. Cowen is represented by Paradigm and LINK Entertainment. Lewis is represented by Independent Talent. Janssen is represented by ICM Partners.

mm

Published

on

RuPaul’s Drag Race season 12 is already underway, so you know what that means: The time has come to get excited about RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars season 5. If you are a new fan of Drag Race and haven’t watched All Stars yet…you are missing out big-time. It’s when all your fave queens from previous seasons of RPDR return for a rematch. It is literally can’t-miss television. The fifth season of All Stars is coming this June, so here’s what you need to know.

Is there even going to be a fifth season?

Uh, obviously! The television gods would be crazy to ever cancel this series. In a video, RuPaul confirmed that a fifth season of All Stars will officially be coming soon.

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

When will it air?

The new season kicks off at 8 p.m. ET on June 5, but not on VH1. RuPaul announced this week that it’ll premiere on Showtime instead.

Who are the judges tho?

I mean, the show *could* mix things up, but chances are, we’ll see the return of Michelle Visage, Ross Matthews, and Carson Kressley—plus a bunch of famous celebrity guest judges. Oh, and RuPaul, of course.

Giphy

Cool, but WHO ARE THE FAN FAVORITES?

First of all, everyone has their own idea of who the ultimate All Stars 5 cast should be. See?

This content is imported from Twitter. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Here are some faves who seem like sure bets…

MIZ CRACKER

Season: 10

Giphy

Okay, sip on this tea: Miz Cracker posted a super-sus Instagram video in May apologizing to fans for postponing a buncha shows—all of which were scheduled in June, which (reminder) is when fans think All Stars 5 is filming.

How-ev-er, last year, Miz Cracker said she wasn’t interested in All Stars, telling ET, “We have such incredibly big fish to fry. There are so many queer people in the world that do not have the rights they deserve, goddamnit. That has to take precedence to me and it does. So that’s what I’m focused on right now. Reality first, then the TV inspired by reality.”

Also, I feel incredibly seen by this tweet:

SHEA COULEÉ

Season: 9

Giphy

Shea was a season 9 finalist, so it just makes sense for her to be on All Stars 5. Plus, like, she said she wanted to do it, telling her Instagram followers, “I’d be crazy to say no. But am I crazy tho?!”

Instagram

Honestly, people desperately want Shea, and if VH1 knows what it’s doing, it’ll realize that:

DERRICK BARRY

Season: 8

Giphy

Kay, first of all, this:

Second of all, during an interview with DigitalSpy, Derrick made it alllll kinds of clear that she is down for All Stars 5, saying, “It’s incredible to even be part of the franchise. I would never turn All Stars down, that’s for sure.” Iiiiinteresting.

But *This* Is the Official Cast

And on the ?? day of quarantine, we finally got the official cast for this season. Without further ado, get ready to see Alexis Mateo, Miz Cracker, Jujubee, Shea Couleé, Blair St. Clair, Derrick Barry, Mariah Paris Balenciaga, Mayhem Miller, India Ferrah, and Ongina battle it out for the ultimate prize!

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

What do they win?

Good question! The winner of All Stars walks away with a $100,000 cash prize and a spot in the Drag Race Hall of Fame. Contestants also stand to win cash, gift cards, and even vacations in mini prizes throughout the season.

Giphy

What about the big twist?

Oh, yeah! Unlike previous All Stars seasons in which the top two queens lip-sync for their legacy and get to decide who goes home each week, this time, the best queen that week will go head-to-head wig-to-wig with a surprise lip-sync assassin from a previous season. If the All Stars 5 queen wins, they get a $10,000 tip and choose who goes home. But if the returning queen wins, the season 5 cast will vote for who must sashay away, and the $10,000 will roll over to the next week. So get ready for a whole lot of drama, alliances, and the best lip-sync battles in Drag Race history.
