Russell Crowe’s ‘Unhinged’ Tops Box Office as U.K., Ireland Limp Back to Normal

Published

on

Road-rage thriller “Unhinged,” starring Russell Crowe, topped the U.K. and Ireland box office over the weekend collecting £175,263 ($229,000), according to final numbers released by Comscore.

The film, released by Altitude Film Distribution, played at 243 locations, marking a cautious return by audiences to cinemas, despite the territory being in the middle of a heat wave.

Disney holdover “Onward” dropped 4%, earning £58,951 ($77,000) from 239 sites. The title has grossed a total of £5.7 million ($7.4 million) since it opened March 6.

In third position is Vertigo’s Australian animation “100% Wolf” with £33,130 ($43,280) from 146 sites, and in fourth position is rerelease “Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back” with £31,137 ($40,673) from 157 sites.

Other new releases include Vertigo’s supernatural film “The Vigil” at fifth position with £30,302 ($39,500) from 97 sites and Picturehouse Entertainment’s astronaut training drama “Proxima,” starring Eva Green, sixth with £30,051 ($39,250) from 135 sites.

A third of the U.K.’s 919 sites have now reopened, with the BFI Southbank set for a Sept. 1 reopening. Some Odeon sites have been open for a few weeks, while Cineworld opened several cinemas on July 31. Vue pushed back its reopening last week from July 31 to Aug. 7.

Warner Bros.’ “American Pickle,” starring Seth Rogen, opens Aug. 7 across more than 100 locations, while 606 Distribution’s “Perfect 10” has a limited release on that date.

The chief hurdle cinemas are set to face from Aug. 8 is that audiences are required to wear face coverings, which might impact attendance. In addition, sunny weather across the U.K. will see a heat wave continuing through the upcoming weekend and into the following week.

Aug. 12 will see the 10th anniversary rerelease of Christopher Nolan’s “Inception,” as a prelude to the main event that audiences worldwide have been awaiting all summer — “Tenet.”

Spotify’s Goal Of A Million Artists Making A Living From Streaming Could Take Nearly 100 Years

Published

on

The music industry is always changing, but these changes have perhaps never come so rapidly as they have in 2020. The coronavirus pandemic has shut down, or at the very least radically changed, many areas of life, and that includes how musicians do what they do. A lot of artists rely on touring for a substantial portion of their income, so closed venues present a new challenge. How much money artists make (or don’t) from streaming their music on Spotify has long been a heated conversation, and now a new wrinkle has been added.

Spotify issued a quarterly letter to shareholders last week (as is a regular occurrence), and it notes, “Growth in the number of artists making up our top tier — those accounting for the top 90% of streams — is accelerating; that cohort now stands at over 43,000 artists, up 43% from 30,000 one year ago.”

As Music Business Worldwide Tim Ingham founder notes in a new Rolling Stone column, Spotify routinely writes in its annual results that it wants “to unlock the potential of human creativity by giving a million creative artists the opportunity to live off their art.” Based on that information, Ingham did some math, and it turns out Spotify’s goal is a lofty one. As Ingham notes, “if Spotify can sustain its current annual pace of ‘top tier’ growth (+13,000 per year) forever more, it would take the company nearly 74 years to transform the 43,000 Club into the 1,000,000 Club.”

There are some eye-opening takeaways between the thesis and conclusion as well. For example, Ingham says the data “suggests that those 2.96 million ‘bottom tier’ Spotify artists would have earned an average of approximately $47 each in Q2. Or just over $15 per month.”
