Stumptown Cancelled at ABC, as COVID-Related Delay Triggers Reversal of Season 2 Renewal

ABC won’t return to Stumptown, after all.

The network has cancelled the Cobie Smulders dramedy, despite renewing it for Season 2 in May, our sister site Deadline reports.

Per Deadline, the cancellation came after delays in starting production — related to the COVID-19 pandemic — meant that the show would not be ready to launch this fall. ABC had planned to return Stumptown to its Wednesdays-at-10/9c time slot.

ABC Signature, which produces the series, reportedly will shop the show to other networks and/or streaming sites.

Stumptown had recently made a change in leadership behind the scenes: Monica Owusu-Breen (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Fringe) had boarded the show as its new co-showrunner alongside creator Jason Richman. She would have succeeded Matt Olmstead, who acted as co-showrunner in Season 1.

In the Season 1 finale, which aired March 25, an excited Ansel opened the front door to reveal his long-estranged mother, whose appearance stunned his big sister Dex. It was then that the episode cut to black, before the audience got a peek at Mama Parios.

In March, co-showrunner Jason Richman told TVLine that it was always the plan to end Season 1 with the arrival of Mama Parios. “It was sort of the big, core mystery, that Dex doesn’t know what happened [to her parents],” he said. “She came back from her time in Afghanistan and found her brother in a home and her parents missing, so she has carried this resentment about it for a long time.”

As for whether we would have met Papa Parios, Richman confirmed, “In the story that we’re going to tell in Season 2, Mom leads to Dad in a way that’s kind of circuitous… We needed Mom to show up first.”

The series is the latest of several recent renewal-reversals, including Comedy Central’s Drunk History and Tosh.0, TruTV’s I’m Sorry and Netflix’s The Society.

Demi Lovato Returns to Social Media in Wake of Max Ehrich Split, Seemingly Shades Her Ex

Just a few days ago, Demi Lovato was set to exchange vows with Max Ehrich at some point in the near future.

Now, however, the singer may be exchanging some harsh words for her ex-fiance instead.

As previously reported, Lovato and Ehrich called off their engagement this week… a mere two months after agreeing to marry.

Neither the artist nor the actor verified the split, but numerous reliable outlets have confirmed this development, with insiders telling these same websites that trouble started to brew later this summer.

“Max is in Atlanta filming and Demi was with him there recently and had been supporting him, but he is just kicking off his career,” a source told Us Weekly, explaining that Ehrich is really focused right now on striking it big in Hollywood.

“Friends thought they were going to implode,” this same person says.

Max Ehrich and Demi Lovato Throwback

Are there are any hard feelings between the exes?

We can’t say for certain.

But Lovato posted a photo on her Instagram Stories account after news of the split went viral that has some people thinking she hurled a bit of shade in Max’s direction.

As you can see above, Demi was rocking a shirt that read “Dogs Over People” for this selfie.

Demi Lovato and Max Ehrich on the Gram

This may have been a harmless and/or irrelevant statement on Demi’s part.

Plenty of people around the globe who have NOT just ended an engagement believe that dogs are better than people, you know?

However, it’s hard not to speculate here.

It’s hard not to wonder if Lovato is making a passive aggressive statement about dogs… and how they are especially loyal… and how Ehrich perhaps has not been.

Demi Lovato and Max Ehrich Together

To be clear, neither Demi nor Max has directly addressed the break-up just yet.

But while Lovato is talking about canines, Ehrich is focusing on a slightly higher being.

In the only post he’s published since splitting from Lovato, The Young and the Restless star simply wrote “Jesus loves you.”

Always a nice reminder.

jesus loves you

According to a variety of sources, Lovato and Ehrich grew very close in a short period of time because they quaratined together amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Of late, as they started to go out and work more and separate a bit, they realized that certain problems existed and they weren’t actually made for each other.

That’s quite a departure, of course, from what both halves of the now-former couple said after they got engaged on July 22.

Demi Lovato Engaged

“I’ve never felt so unconditionally loved by someone in my life (other than my parents) flaws and all,” Lovato wrote at the time, addressing Ehrich and adding:

“You never pressure me to be anything other than myself. And you make me want to be the best version of myself…

“I love you forever my baby. My partner. Here’s to our future!!!!”

Ehrich, for his part, felt the same. Back then at least.

Demi and Max

“You are the most beautiful inside and out in the entire world & I couldn’t be more grateful God brought us together,” he wrote online.

Beautiful words on each side — but not long-lasting ones, we now know.

“It was a tough decision, but Demi and Max have decided to go their separate ways to focus on their respective careers,” People Magazine reports.

“They have respect and love for one another and will always cherish the time they spent together.”

Christian Bale would make a much better Dario Agger than Beta Ray Bill on ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’

While he has not yet been confirmed for the film, the internet is all abuzz with the news that Christian Bale is in talks for ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’.

Rumors and discussions are already swirling in regards to which character he is likely to play, and many are excited at the idea of him finally bringing Beta Ray Bill to the silver screen.

As great as it would be to see the cosmic Korbonite brought to life, ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ doesn’t need a third hammer-wielder detraction from what should be Jane Foster’s (Natalie Portman) story. What Christian Bale would be perfect for, though, is the role of Darrio Agger, CEO of the most evil corporation in Marvel history.

Let’s get this out of the way. Beta Ray Bill is a great character, and it would be fantastic to see a version of him in the MCU. Introduced in 1983 in ‘The Mighty Thor’ #337, Beta Ray Bill was the first person outside of Asgard who was worthy enough to lift Mjolnir.

Hailing from a race known as the Korbonites, he proved to be such a worthy warrior that Odin had another hammer crafted for Bill. Bill wields Stormbreaker, giving him powers equal to Thor, and he fights for justice throughout the galaxy with his sentient ship ‘Skuttlebutt’ by his side.

He is powerful, bizarre, and fascinating. And while that seems right in Taika Waititi’s wheelhouse, giving him a smaller part would be a disservice to the character — and giving him a larger one would be a service to Jane Foster.

‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ is being set up as a Jane Foster movie. The title itself implies that it will be rekindling the romance between Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Jane, who was noticeably absent from ‘Thor: Ragnorak.’

The movie’s announcement came with the news that Jane Foster would be following her comic book counterpart in wielding Thor’s legendary hammer and taking on Thor’s mantle herself. If that’s the movie Marvel’s going with, then Bill is a story that’s going to have to wait for another day.

Meanwhile, ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ still needs a villain, and there’s none better to ground Thor than CEO Dario Agger.

Introduced in Jason Aaron’s epic run on ‘Thor: God of Thunder’, the character presented a unique challenge to both Jane Foster and Thor Odison. Despite his ability to turn into a minotaur, what makes Dario Agger a threat is the power he wields as CEO of Roxxon, an unscrupulous international organization. Agger never threatens Thor directly, but instead goes after the town of Broxton, Oklahoma, through entirely legal (if unethical) means. With the Asgardians now living on earth, as shown in ‘Avengers: Endgame’, they’re vulnerable to the whims of the ultra-rich.

Bale would be perfect for the role, having performed in roles both sinister and unhinged. He would bring darkness to Dario Agger’s arrogant swagger that could make for a compelling villain that ties Thor even closer to Midgard, his adopted realm after Asgard’s destruction.

Co-creator Jason Aaron himself seems to agree with this idea, tweeting, “You know who’s got my vote. ‘Who Is Christian Bale Playing in THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER?'” He posted this with an image of Dario Agger.

There are, or course, a wealth of other characters from Marvel mythology for ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ to draw from, and ‘Thor: Ragnorak’ was full of surprises. Bale, if confirmed for a role, may be playing someone completely unexpected. In the meanwhile, we can only wait for more news on this story to unfold.

‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ releases in theaters on November 5, 2021.
