What It’s Like to Be a Flight Attendant Right Now

For our new series What It’s Like, we chat with people from different backgrounds about how their lives have changed since the new coronavirus became a global pandemic. For today’s installment, we spoke with Sharon, a flight attendant. She requested anonymity because she doesn’t have permission from her company to speak with the press, so we changed her name and aren’t naming her employer.

Sharon* is a 40-year-old flight attendant on a major airline—and, at least as of the date of publication, she’s still working. In part, this is a choice: Sharon says she feels like it’s her responsibility to help people get back home, especially in light of the fact that the State Department recently issued a Level 4 “do not travel” advisory, advising all citizens currently abroad to arrange for immediate return to the United States, unless they are prepared to remain where they are for an indefinite period.

According to the Department of Homeland security, air-transportation employees are considered essential and can continue working right now. Likewise, Sharon sees her job as an essential service—“just like the grocery store employees are considered essential,” she says. “I don’t think at this point people are running around vacationing, at least I hope not. I think they’re trying to get from A to B. I think they didn’t listen for two weeks when everyone said get your butt to where you need to be. Now we’re making up for it.”

I talked to Sharon on the phone about what it’s like to be in the skies right now—how she’s feeling, how the passengers are behaving, and the safety precautions she and her colleagues are taking to protect themselves and their customers. She also followed up on a few points via email after our chat.

Below is a lightly edited version of our correspondence.

SELF: Tell me about your past month or so of travel.

Sharon: I was traveling for over a week this month. I’m getting all of these trips that I wouldn’t normally get, because people don’t want to work. I went from New York to South America, then back to the U.S. for flights to a few different states, then back to South America.

SELF: Talk to me about what work is like right now.

Sharon: I was in denial for a long time. But holy smokes, there’s no denying what’s happening now. Before I left for my trips this month, I wasn’t one of those people who was hibernating. I was going to yoga. I was trying to get my hair or lashes done. I wish I would’ve kept a little journal.

These days, there’s barely anything for me to do at work. We’re flying mostly empty planes and we just have to be a person on the plane. We’re just trying to take care of each other. We spread our passengers out as much as possible. On a flight I was on the other day, it said we were going to have 100 passengers, and then only 30 showed up.

SELF: Are you being provided with certain precautionary items for your flights or handling things differently once you’re on board?

Sharon: In terms of precautionary items, we have not been offered any masks, but you can wear one if you want. [Editor’s note: Soon after this interview, Sharon’s employer started providing masks to flight attendants. The CDC does not recommend healthy travelers (or crew) wear face masks to protect themselves, but does recommend that cabin crew take precautions like practicing routine handwashing and using alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol. They do, however, suggest that crews wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including a face mask, eye protection, disposable medical gloves, and a gown to cover clothing when tending to a sick traveler who has a persistent cough, fever, or difficulty breathing.] We wear blue gloves instead of the clear ones we had before and don’t offer hot towels because people wipe their face, then give you back the hot towel, and then it’s just spreading everywhere. When we arrive at any airport, there is a team that comes on the plane, pulling out every tray table and wiping it down with Clorox.

Migration Between Emails: Is It Always a Solution?

Much of our online life is connected with email. It is needed for almost all activities on the Internet: tickets, receipts, and passwords are sent there. Too much personal data is stored in your inbox, from which one can create a dossier of your interests, travels, and social connections. Phishing attacks that are launched via email and can compromise the entire corporate network are dangerous for businesses. The risks for individuals are different, but they are no less serious. Therefore, if you are not satisfied with your mailing service, perhaps it is time to change it.

How to Migrate from One Email Service to Another?

Whatever the reason for your decision is, there are two possible ways to transfer all your data from one service to another, i.e., manual and automated.

As you may guess, the first approach is used by people who have at least a common understanding of how the email works. If you are not sure that you can perform this task without data loss, use the advanced email converter to do it for you.

Is It Always a Solution?

If you are a Gmail user, you may be outraged that Google uses some of the information from your mailbox in its other services. For example, data from air tickets are automatically added to the calendar, and a map of the booked hotel location is loaded into your phone. These tools are useful and can save you time, but few people will like that email data is used for other purposes.

Another question is how secure your email is and whether it is good enough for your needs. For many people, the protection level of Gmail, Outlook, or Yahoo is more than enough. The account can be further secured using two-factor authentication, which includes security keys.

Another option is to use a completely different service that puts privacy first and uses end-to-end encryption wherever possible. This is especially useful if you plan to send some sensitive data via email that should not be related to your identity.

Create a Temporary Email Account

Gmail and Outlook have billions of users because of their convenience. They are both free and provide access to a variety of services on their own cloud platforms. For these reasons, they cannot be completely abandoned, but there is also another option, i.e., a temporary email.

Accounts created for one-time use will help you avoid advertising and marketing spam. Increasingly, companies are starting to implement such account opportunities into their services to prevent competitors from collecting user data. This is primarily achieved by creating a one-time address from random numbers and letters that can be used to register with the service. If necessary, they can even forward correspondence to your permanent email. So, why not to separate your private and work emails?

How to Choose Children’s Shoes Right: Tips and Tricks

From the moment the baby appears, it grows up so rapidly that it soon requires children’s shoes. Therefore, the question of how to choose the right children’s shoes is very important. After all, the health of the baby depends on what products parents buy. There are many nuances that you will have to face when choosing footwear. So, let’s discuss them together.

Why It Is Important to Choose the Shoes Correctly

It is necessary to choose the right size of toddler boy shoes, to distinguish high-quality material from low-quality, to understand whether it is comfortable for your child to wear a particular pair on his feet.

Parents need to remember that children’s footwear should not affect the anatomically correct formation of the baby’s feet, so footwear should be of high quality, made from safe and non-toxic materials, and meet the strictest orthopedic requirements. Besides, they should please both you and your baby in design.

Fitting Tips

When a certain pair has already been chosen, there are several moments to pay attention to:

  • Suitable instep: pay attention to the instep or fullness of the foot. Shoes in no case can be very narrow, as blood circulation can be damaged. Moreover, if it is a winter pair, then in such footwear the child can catch a cold. Make sure that the feet get the required support.
  • Fullness: footwear that fits well in terms of fullness will be effortlessly put on. Today, almost all manufacturers produce shoes of different fullness within the same size: wide, medium, and narrow.
  • Space: Try to choose shoes that leave a small space between the toes and the end of the shoes (about 1.5 cm). This applies to both winter and summer shoes. In summer, the leg will swell due to the heat and, accordingly, will increase in size. In winter, this “extra” space will allow you to put on denser and warmer socks, without bringing discomfort to the baby.
  • Insole: If you are choosing a closed pair, pay special attention to the insole. It should be removable, well absorb moisture, and remain wash-resistant.
  • Heel: Many experts are unanimous in the opinion that children’s shoes should have a small heel since it does not allow the child to fall back and actively participates in the formation of the correct gait.

Finally, shoes should be made of breathable and natural material. This is very important since the children’s legs often sweat. However, walking with wet feet is both unpleasant and uncomfortable, and extremely dangerous to health. Pay attention to the flexibility of the material — this will provide additional comfort, as well as improve air circulation and allow excess moisture to evaporate. Good luck!
