Why Is There So Much Religion in Netflix’s ‘Away?’

Hilary Swank in Netflix’s “Away”

(Warning: This post does contain some spoilers for “Away” on Netflix).

Do you need faith in a higher power to get through a strenuous mission to Mars? In Netflix’s Hilary Swank-led space drama series “Away,” showrunner Jessica Golberg found the oh-so-subtlest ways to ask that very question with an intertwining theme of faith and religion — which we just couldn’t help but notice.

For instance, consider how one of the five astronauts on the mission to Mars, Dr. Kwesi Weisberg-Abban (Ato Essandoh), was left orphaned when his birth parents died and was then adopted by a Jewish woman and her husband. Throughout the eight-month mission, Kwesi often prays openly, and in the final episode he even ends up swaying the usually agnostic Dr. Lu Wang (Vivian Wu), who asks him to lead them in prayer as they approach their difficult and potentially fatal landing on Mars.

Then there’s that scene where Commander Emma Green’s (Swank) daughter Alexis (Talitha Eliana Bateman) takes her boyfriend to Catholic mass — not your average activity for a couple of love-struck fifteen-year-olds.

Throughout the series, the astronauts are guided through every terrifying moment where something goes wrong by a sense of “hope,” which might as well be synonymous with faith — whether that’s in God, science, or something else entirely is up for interpretation.

“When you talk about the universe, it’s hard to eclipse those questions of faith,” Goldberg told TheWrap. “We did a lot of research, we talked to a lot of astronauts, and one thing we kept hearing was when you’re up there, if you’re atheist, you’re even more of an atheist, or if you believe, you become a deeper believer. I think because we were having those conversations in the [writers] room, they just worked into the larger fabric of the show.”

It should come as no surprise to fans of the sci-fi space travel genre that a mission to Mars also brings up the ultimate question: are we alone?

“When you’re questioning about going to the moon or Mars or other planets, you’re questioning, ‘Is there life in other places? Are we the only life?’ The sort of Russian doll of questions that you start to ask ends up always coming around to faith in some way,” Goldberg continued. “We felt that a lot of scientists are agnostics, are atheists, but it felt important to have someone up there who had faith and believed. And you hear about people having experiences in space.”

Even astronauts who don’t necessarily believe in God have reported feeling something close to the divine when peering out of that little window down at that blue marble, Earth, Goldberg said.

“We talked to Don Pettit, who didn’t believe in God, who’s been in space for hundreds of hours, and he felt more a spiritual sense with the Earth,” she said of the American chemical engineer and NASA astronaut. “Some people experience little lights and have more of a religious experience.”

“In our [writers] room, we’d be talking about these things, and then it would definitely evolve back to, ‘Is there a God? Do you need faith to get through these kinds of missions? What happens if you believe in nothing? What if there is other life out there?’” she continued. “If we get to go on and have a Season 2, that question will play even more deeply because the question of life on Mars is the scientific basis, you know, it’s the holy grail of what Mars could possibly hold.”

Could there be little green men on Mars? Do they know something about a higher power that we don’t? Let’s hope “Away” gets a second season so we can find out.

We all know that Watchmen is an American show on the streaming program HBO, which reveals an amazing storyline in front of the fans. The series has been inspired by the 1986 best comic series. Has the series ended with the first season? or will we go to have the next season?

After its arrival, the series proved to be a super hit. The second season of the series is in demand from the fans. A Lot of fans are holding on to watch Season 2 and asking about the arrival of the second season.

When Will It Going To Release

Till now, the streaming program HBO hasn’t affirmed the renewal of Watchmen Season 2. Yet, what we can let you know is that maker Nicole Kassell has given us the beam of expectation during a meeting with Business Insider. So we can expect Season 2 not too far off. I’m a fan of this drama series, so what I can expect if there will be Season 2, at that point it will be too awesome to watch.

Cast Details of The Series

If fans are expecting Season 2, so it is without a doubt that the characters who didn’t endure the first season won’t have a return in Season 2. So the characters who experienced the Watchmen Season 1 will probably be back with no uncertainty.

However, with every one of these castings, there will be a potential and terrible exit of Lindelof. In January 2020, he announced that he has no drama to return in the second run of the series.

What Know About Its Storyline

Right now, we can talk anything about the plotting because we don’t know that Season 2 will occur or not. We can’t expect what impact will Season 1 will leave on Season 2. And furthermore, we don’t have any prospects to see Lindelof, so right now, we truly can’t anticipate anything.

What we can do is a promise for the second season to happen and release by the nextyear. For all the more further updates, stay tuned with us.

The Attack On Titan Season 4 release date has officially been confirmed to be scheduled for December 7, 2020. The Shingeki no Kyojin Season 4 announcement was made by Japanese public broadcaster NHK, which listed Attack On Titan: Final Season on their TV broadcasting schedule.

Prior to this announcement, NHK had quietly changed its official page which stated that Shingeki no Kyojin Season 4 “will broadcast in fall 2020 on NHK General TV”.

Although NHK’s schedule has already revealed the Shingeki no Kyojin Season 4 release date, the webpage still states that NHK will broadcast Attack On Titan: Final Season without any mention of a release time frame.

Crunchyroll, FUNimation confirm Attack On Titan Season 4 streaming plans and English dub

Earlier in the week, Crunchyroll’s Attack On Titan Season 4 trailer announced that they would be streaming the fourth season.

SnK Season 4 will be streaming internationally on Crunchyroll in U.S., Canada, U.K., Ireland, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, and Latin America.

Similarly, FUNimation’s Attack On Titan Season 4 English sub is scheduled to come out the same day as the Japanese broadcast. Presumably, that will the morning of December 7 since Japan is 13 hours ahead and anime typically broadcasts on TV late at night, oftentimes past midnight local time.

FUNimation announced that Attack On Titan: Final Season “starts later this year in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Ireland.” The fourth season will also come out later on FUNimation in Brazil and Mexico.

In addition, FUNimation’s Attack On Titan Season 4 English dub episodes, or SimulDub episodes, will be streaming “at a later date”.

While that could mean the AoT Season 4 dub will be a 2020 Christmas present, the dubbing process has become more difficult due to COVID-19 safety precautions. In the worst-case scenario, we’re probably looking at early 2021 for the English dub.

Shingeki no Kyojin Season 4: Studio MAPPA replaces WIT Studio

The first three seasons of the anime series was produced by WIT Studio. The Attack on Titan 4 anime will be produced by animation studio MAPPA, which is known for The God of High School anime, Yuri!!! On Ice, Netflix’s Dorohedoro anime and the upcoming Zombieland Saga Season 2 (Zombieland Saga Revenge).

Former Chief Director Tetsuro Araki will be replaced by director Yuichiro Hayashi, who just wrapped up directing Dorohedoro. Similarly, character designer Tomohiro Kishi also worked on Dorohedoro and is replacing Kyoji Asano, but that’s not surprising since Asano is a WIT Studio co-founder.

As might be expected, the entire animation team is different, but MAPPA has pulled together some good talent. Former AoT Chief Animation Director Satoshi Kadowaki was directly attached to WIT Studio so he’s being replaced by Daisuke Niinuma, who’s known for his work on Banana Fish, Kakegurui, Punch Line, To The Abandoned Sacred Beasts, and Deadman Wonderland.

Art director Kazuo Ogura also directed the art for notables like the Dragon Ball Super: Broly movie. 3D CG Director Takahiro Uezono worked on the 3D production for Kill la Kill, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and Yuri!! On Ice.

Keep in mind that many anime creators are contractors so they’re not tied to WIT Studio. That means some of the staff are returning from the previous Attack On Titan Seasons to work at MAPPA.

Most importantly, AoT Seasons 1 through 3 scriptwriter Hiroshi Seko (Vinland Saga, Mob Psycho 100) is returning. Attack On Titan music composer Hiroyuki Sawano is also returning, although he’s joined by Kohta Yamamoto who is known for his work on The Seven Deadly Sins anime.
